Getting married is one of the most important events in a person's life. Unlike the movies, you can't just run out and get married at the spur of the moment though.

Get A Marriage License

• License must be obtained from County Clerk of County in which marriage is to be performed.
   
• Applicants must have satisfactory proof that each party to the marriage will have obtained the age of 18 years at the time the license is effective or will have attained the age of 16 years and has the consent of both parents, his legal guardian, or judicial approval.
   
• Parents or legal guardian or person(s) needing a consent must appear before the County Clerk where such minor person resides or before Notary Public and make affidavit that they are the parents or legal guardian of such minor person. Such consent shall list the names and dates of birth of both parties to the application of marriage. A consent for the marriage must have the signature of the County Clerk or Notary Seal and Signature or it will not be accepted.
   
• Proof of age - Parenthood – Legal Guardianship must be furnished upon request.
   
• Application for marriage license may be made to the County Clerk’s office between the hours of 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday thru Friday.
   
• Marriage license is effective one (1) day after it is issued. Marriage must be performed in the County in which the license was issued. License is VOID if not used within sixty (60) days.
   
• Two (2) forms of identification are needed, one of which must be a picture identification (VALID Driver's License or State I.D., military I.D. or valid passport).
   
• Blood tests are no longer required.
   
• Fee for marriage license is $45.00.
   
• If one or both applicants have been divorced in the past year, you must bring a copy of the divorce decree.

Courthouse Weddings

Effective January 2, 2019, marriages will be performed at the St. Clair County courthouse every Monday through Friday at 1:15 p.m. To get  married, you will need a valid marriage license and $10.00 (exact change) for the marriage fee. Please bring the license and the fee to the Law Library conference room on the first floor at 1:15 p.m., and the clerk will complete the paperwork for you. Also the court clerk requests that couples bring two (2) witnesses of their own, age 18 years or older.

We will attempt to perform the weddings in the order in which couples arrive. If you arrive after 1:15 p.m., you may not be able to be married that day due to the judges’ trials and availability, but definitely no marriages may be performed after 2:00 p.m.

It is the position of judges performing weddings that the marriage contract is a serious commitment.  Dress and attitude appropriate to such commitment are required. A judge may refuse to conduct the ceremony if both parties do not exhibit such commitment.
